From Timber Mills to Dairy Cattle
Timboon is located
in a rich dairying area on the western side of the Otways and is 20 minutes
by road north of Port Campbell and the scenic Great Ocean Road.
Timboon
was first settled in 1877, the town began to prosper when the railway was
opened in 1892. Timber was the main industry in the district at this time,
with as many as 18 mills producing approximately 13,000 ton of timber a
year. Today Dairy Farming is the main income for most families in the district
along with timber and other primary products such as prime lamb, beef,
deer, emu, ostrich, unique cheeses and fresh strawberries. With a population
of around 850 people Timboon provides all the necessary services needed
for a growing rural community.
